Look at the birds

Reading: Matthew 6: 25 – 34

Over the last ten years or so I have become known as the “Bird Man”. One of my passionate interests is watching and learning about the birds we see around us every day; in the garden, flying overhead, seen while driving and when we get out bush.

Some of this interest has developed into reporting what I have seen to several databases which collect such information. This is my small contribution to caring for our environment.

I also have matched this interest with a love of both photography and writing. On most occasions when we go bush I take my camera with me. I am always on the lookout for getting photographs the birds I see. Then at home, I share the best of these photos online, writing about them. Over the last few years, I have also had dozens of invitations to speak to various community groups in this area, illustrating my talks with some of the many thousands of photos I have taken.

As we read in today’s reading from Matthew’s gospel, Jesus was also aware of the birds. He used them to illustrate the lesson he was trying to convey to those who were listening. He tells us to “Look at the birds” in our everyday lives. They don’t sow, or reap, or gather into barns – yet God looks after them. Aren’t you worth more than the birds?

This whole passage teaches us not to be anxious, not to worry, and not to be too concerned about everyday things. God will provide for us. Rather than letting those things concern us, we should instead “seek first his kingdom, and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Our Hope in Christ

Our Hope in Christ

Reading: Colossians 1: 1 – 12.

We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you,  because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people—  the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven…”

In the opening lines of Paul’s letter to the believers in Colossae, he mentions their hope – the ‘hope stored up for you in heaven.’

Our hope in Christ is not a wishy-washy kind of hope. It’s not the kind of hope that says: “I hope my team wins” or “I hope it will be a fine day for the picnic.”

Our hope in Christ is a certain hope. It is a hope which knows that our destiny is safe, secure, and certain with no doubt as to our true home. It is a hope with its foundation in our true destination in the journey of life: eternity with Christ in heaven.

The writer to the Hebrews says: “This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. (Hebrews 6: 19 – 20)

Our hope in Christ is the anchor of our soul, saving us from crashing into the rocks of destruction in this world. With such a strong and safe anchor like our hope in Christ Jesus, we can ride out the storms of life, knowing that our hope in Christ – who is our anchor – is both sure and steadfast in every situation.
