These uncertain times

From time to time as we reflect on life and certain events in life, one can easily come to the conclusion that we live in uncertain times. We do not know what tomorrow – or next month – will bring. The further into the future we try to predict what may or may not happen – in our own lives, in society, in the weather, or in the economy to name a few – the more uncertain we become.

This is nothing new. James, in his letter to the early church warns: Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. (James 4:14) James calls this arrogant boasting, and adds: Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” (James 4:15)

Over the last few weeks the people of South Australia could be excused for feeling somewhat uncertain about the political future of our state as they waited on the result of the recent election. While the result seems to be now settled, the new government will preside over a very uncertain parliament. One thing can be certain in this uncertain scenario; politics will be far from dull over the next four years. More than ever our members of parliament need our prayers.

As Christians, however, there are many things we can be very sure about. In uncertain times we can be certain of our salvation. If we have trusted in Jesus Christ as our saviour, we can be absolutely sure of our eternal destiny. John wrote: I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. (I John 5:13) This is just one of many things we can be certain of when we are in Christ.

Rejoice in the Lord

‘Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!’ (Phil 4:4)

Rejoicing in the Lord can be a daily experience in our lives. After all, we have so much to rejoice in when we are in Christ. Here is a list of just a few of our blessings in Christ from the first chapter of Ephesians:

  • In Christ we have the forgiveness of sin.
  • In Christ we have an eternal hope.
  • In Christ we have been redeemed through His blood.
  • In Christ, the riches of God’s grace have been lavished upon us.
  • In Christ we have been adopted into God’s family.
  • In Christ we have a guaranteed inheritance which cannot be taken away.
  • In Christ we have cleansing from all unrighteousness – from all sin.
  • In Christ we have the promise of eternal life.

Rejoicing in the Lord can be a natural state for us, no matter what is happening around us, if we have an attitude of rejoicing. It should be our normal state of mind. We need to make a deliberate choice to rejoice in the Lord and what He has done for us through Jesus Christ.

In the midst of challenging and sometimes terrible social changes all around, in the distress of family troubles, in the pain, turmoil and uncertainty of illness or bereavement, our position in Christ never changes. That should bring us a deep, satisfying joy that no-one and nothing can take from us.

‘And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’ (Phil 4:7)

CWCI Convention, Victor Harbor

Every March quite a number of our congregation head off to the CWCI Convention in Victor Harbor, about an hour’s drive south of Adelaide, South Australia.

CWCI stands for Christian Women Communicating International.

Various local committees throughout Australia organise smaller events such as coffee mornings and dinners. Thousands of women around the country meet weekly or fortnightly to study the Bible. These meetings are known as KYB – Know Your Bible. There are over 2300 groups, so there is probably one near you.

The Victor Harbor weekend is also a special weekend for a few of the men in our church. Couples hitch up their caravans and head for the seaside venue. While the women are gathering for their meetings, the men have a great time of fellowship too, sitting around in the caravan park solving the world’s problems, going for walks along the beach or around Granite Island, catching up on reading – or just catching up on a little sleep.

The ladies meet at Investigator College on Bacchus Road, Victor Harbor.
